Hello friends,
Welcome to another exciting issue of University of Wisconsin Law School’s Gargoyle magazine! We’ve got some especially fascinating stories to share with you in this edition.
First is a topic we’ve all been hearing a lot about: AI. How will artificial intelligence shape the legal profession, and how are we at UW Law preparing students for a future in which AI’s role will undoubtedly grow and evolve? You can read more about that in the article, “Navigating the Future.”
We also take a look into the field of family law, which, as we know, touches people’s lives in dramatic and meaningful ways. But what does that look like in 2024? Learn about trends in family law and why students are drawn to the field in, “Family Law.”
In this edition, we also explore the past, present and future of graduate programs at UW Law School in “A Badger on (Almost) Every Continent” and welcome Margaret Miller as our new alumni relations officer. We also welcome Professor Ahmed White, a labor and employment law expert, as our new James E. Jones Jr. Chair.
This issue highlights the groundbreaking work of our existing faculty, including Professor Jeffrey Glazer, clinical professor in the Law and Entrepreneurship Clinic. Glazer and his students crisscross the state making presentations and holding office hours for Wisconsin’s aspiring creators and innovators through the Rural Entrepreneurship Program. You can learn more about this valuable asset to Wisconsin’s people and economy in “Sowing the Seeds of Rural Entrepreneurship.”
Also highlighted in this edition are Professor Renagh O’Leary, who recently made the transition from clinical to tenure-track faculty, and Professor Nate Atkinson, an economist researching both business and election law. Both are rising stars in their fields, contributing exponentially to the depth and breadth of our faculty. You can learn more about them in “A Professor’s Advocacy Changes Tracks” and “‘Spoiler’ Alert” respectively.
Within this edition, we’ve got a lot of other wonderful treats as well, including an update on our strategic plan in “Building Momentum,” and an interview with Vice Chancellor Charles Hoslet ’89, who is retiring after 27 years at the university in “The Relationship Manager.”
We’ve got so many other gems in this edition, including an update on the Great Lakes Tribal Law Collection in “Enhancing Power and Visibility of Tribal Laws” and interviews with several of our impressive students and outstanding alumni. I can’t wait for you to read all about it.
In closing, a big thank-you to all of you who have supported the Law School financially over the past year. We depend upon our alumni and other friends giving back to keep the great opportunities we offer accessible to the next generation of lawyers and leaders. In the article, “In Memory of a Life of Service and to Others,” you can read all about how our incredible alumni donors like Joan Stafslien ’92 are shaping the futures of the next generation of Badger lawyers and leaders.
We hope you enjoy reading these stories. We are, as always, eternally grateful.
On, Wisconsin!
